Timeless Exterior Paint Colours We Love

Apr 4, 2022 | Design 101, Outdoor

Just like you have a colour palette you work with for the inside of your home, you should have a colour palette for the exterior of your home. You can paint everything on the outside one colour, but I’m not sure what that will do to your curb appeal. Actually, I do. It would look boring.

What should you be considering for your exterior colour palette? For example your roof, windows, front door, porch, trim, garage doors, etc. are all elements that contribute to your exterior colour palette.

Earthy Grays & Creamy Neutrals

Various tones of grays and creamy neutrals continue to dominate in exterior paint colour trends in 2023. This is a trend that has been popular for a few years now, thanks to the ultra popular Modern Farmhouse design style and will continue to be the go-to exterior paint colour combo for a lot of people for quite some time to come.

Here are our favourite shades of Greys and Whites for the exterior:

L to R: Benjamin Moore colours – White Dove, Swiss Coffee, Classic Gray, Soot, Hale Navy

Earthy Greens and Aqua Inspired Blues

When it comes to exterior paint colour trends that are fairly new to the scene, that’s where shades of greens and blues come in. The more popular shades of greens and blues tend to be on the more grayish side.

If you’re up to dipping your toe into this trend, think about combining an earthy green or an aqua blue with a creamy colour. See our note about colour blocking below. That could be the first step towards adopting this trend as an exterior paint colour for your home.

Jewel Tones, Terracotta & Vibrant Hues

While we see homes with exteriors in vibrant hues and terracottas as well as jewel tones, we prefer to use these colours as accents in our exterior colour palette recommendations. Think about using these colours for your front door, garage door or on shutters.

These beautiful accent colours are a great way to draw the eye onto your front door from the road. It’s a fantastic way to create that eye-catching curb appeal.

Now that we have talked about specific exterior colour trends, let’s chat about another colour trend we are noticing.

Colour Blocking

Colour blocking is using blocks of colour in your exterior to break up a monotone look. For example, you could use a creamy white for the most of your exterior and use a medium gray tone to accentuate an architectural feature.

This trend allows you to create an interesting look for the exterior of your home that will help it stand out on a street where all the houses are painted in one colour. It also gives you a chance to try out a colour in a small section of your exterior.
