Stylish Decorating Ideas to Elevate Your Patio

If you have any sort of an outdoor space, may that be a balcony, patio or a deck, consider yourself lucky. More importantly, is your outdoor space in a state that you want to hangout there as soon as the weather gets warm enough?

Don’t worry if you haven’t even thought about your outdoor spaces given that there’s about a foot of snow outside at the time this blog post is being written.

But you’ll need to start thinking about and making plans, if you are looking to spruce up your patio and need to buy furnishings this year. With the supply chain delays we’ve been seeing for the last couple of years, it’s even more important this year to plan ahead.

Here are our stylish patio decorating ideas to create a space that will be a great hangout all summer long, pandemic restrictions or not.  We say patio decorating ideas but these tips can apply to balconies, terraces, decks–pretty much any outdoor space.

Interesting Patterns in Flooring

What the what now, you say?

Over the last few years, we’ve seen how popular hexagons, herringbones and chevrons patterns are on interior floors. If you are in the market to change up your exterior flooring, why not extend these same patterns into your patio or deck.

What if you have no interest in rebuilding your deck or patio?  Opt for an outdoor rug that will bring in a lot of style instead.

Monochromatic Colour Palettes

White on white, white washed, Mediterranean looking outdoor spaces are a big trend for 2022. This might be the exterior version of the white walls trend we’ve been seeing in interiors for a while catching up to the outdoor spaces.

You’ve heard us talk about how monochromatic interiors elevate your home. It does the same for your exteriors.

For anyone new to our blog, monochromatic colour palettes incorporate a few shades and tones of one colour. To get it right, be sure to mix in a variety of textures and patterns in the colour of your choice.

Just like you would in your interior, bring in patterns and texture in your rug and throw pillows. Add a few floor cushions to your outdoor space too. This will give you more opportunities to incorporate patterns and textures.

If your mind is kinda blown right now at the idea that you should have a colour palette for your exterior space, then wait till this next thing I’m going to tell tell you. For a truly elevated look, you should include the colours of the plants and flowers you will have in your outdoor space.

Rattan Furniture

Our third patio decorating idea is rattan. That shouldn’t surprise anyone since rattan is a huge trend in interiors but it has been a staple in exteriors for a lot longer.

Rattan furniture is a great choice for outdoors because it can weather the elements really well. This is great news because rattan is a eco-friendly, high quality material that has been very much in trend for the last few years. It has a timeless, chic aesthetic and it will last for a long time.

One downside for rattan furniture is that you have to know how to take care of it. It’s best to cover it up and keep it out of the sun, when you’re not using it. Other than that, wiping it down with a clean, damp cloth every now and then to clean is about all the maintenance it needs.

Beautiful Lighting

I’ll go as far as to say this next tip is my favourite patio decorating idea by far!

We have written a couple of articles about interior lighting and the same principles apply to exterior lighting. You are not going to use your outdoor space after dark, if you don’t have proper lighting for the space.

I love using string lights in outdoor spaces. It automatically makes the space a little romantic and ready for a party at the same time, right?

I use LED outdoor globe or ball lights too. You can adjust the colour of these to create a certain mood. That’s kinda cool in my books.

The other must have for me on the patio or a deck is some beautiful lanterns. Lanterns can be ornate or linear depending on the style of the space. I also use LED candles inside because we don’t want any fires starting anywhere in our homes, right?

I also like using spotlights directed at trees in my outdoor space to create a little drama. You can also use spotlights directed at your exterior fence to add another layer of lighting to your garden.

Vertical Gardens

When we talked about 2022 design trends a few weeks ago, we identified plants as a key trend for this year. Obviously that expands into our outdoor spaces. Think outside the box on how you can incorporate plants into your decor.

Vertical gardens are perfect if you have a small outdoor space like a condo balcony. They are also great if you have privacy walls that look too industrial and need a little green touch to soften the look.
