1. Choose the right wall for your gallery.
What’s a good wall for a gallery feature? That’s a trick question! Well, maybe not so much. Pretty much any wall will do. Choosing a space is probably the easiest step in the process!
You can choose a wall space that goes from ceiling to the floor or a smaller space above a piece of furniture like a sofa, a bed or a sideboard. Just make sure to leave enough room between the furniture and the artwork to avoid them being too cramped. You can also layer your look and add more dimensions to the feature by putting display items on any of the furniture like tabletops or shelves too.

2. Think about artwork in themes, colours and textures.
The next question to tackle is what kind of a gallery wall do you want to create. For example, you could create a gallery based on an accent colour in the room or around a topic you’re passionate about like watercolour or travelling. Choose a theme that truly represents who you are, after all, your home should be a reflection of you.
Many people also tend to forget that you have total creative control regarding the type of artwork you choose. It doesn’t always have to be flat, framed prints; it can be mirrors, funky ceramics, a living wall with plants, woven baskets, plush stuffed animals for a children’s room, just as some examples. 3. Decide on your gallery layout.

4. Pick your frames carefully.
Depending on your style and the layout you choose, varying the frame colours and sizes for your artwork can add a lot of dimension to your gallery wall. That’s assuming the artwork you want to use needs framing!
For symmetrical, grid-patterned galleries, it’s best to go with the same framing for all the artwork–this is where the beauty of these arrangements come out, so being orderly and symmetrical all throughout is more pleasing to the eye and allows the actual subject of the art to really shine.
With freeform gallery walls, you can have a bit more fun with different frame colours and sizes. If you’re going for a playful look but still want some structure, try to unify the frames with one common element like using frames of similar colour or size.
If you want to stand out with your freeform gallery, you can even choose different shapes, sizes, colours and finishes of frames in the same installation, if that’s the look you prefer. The trick here is knowing how to balance all of the above.

5. Install your design on the wall.
Once you have the artwork, layout and the frames figured out for all your elements, it’s finally time to install them! Just remember that the key to a successful wall gallery installation is balancing all of the different elements we discussed above.
We recommend cutting out templates of frames or the artwork in the sizes you want to use on old newspapers or on brown craft paper first. Arrange them on the wall using painter’s tape to hold them in position. Once you’ve settled on the layout of the frames, mark where the nails will need to be hammered in, so you can avoid any mistakes once you take your paper templates off.
