Easy Fall Updates to Inspire You and Cozy Up Your Home

Do you change up your decor for Fall and Winter? I know people who have a completely different set of decor for Fall and Winter from what they use for Spring and Summer.

In the last 20 years, I moved so often and lived in small, urban spaces for pretty much all of my adult life. Consequently, that meant I had little or no options for storage. Having a different set of decor for seasons seemed a little crazy to me. I suppose if I had somewhere to store things, it could definitely be fun to change up the decor each season.

After being at home for almost 2 years now, this idea of changing decor to mark the beginning of a new season is definitely appealing. A new ritual to mark a new beginning. After all, September already feels like a new beginning, right?

Here are some of the ways I’ve decided to welcome fall this year.

I’m always short on storage and time. That means any new decor practices I adopt right now have to be small and simple to adopt.

Add Some Candles

Candles make your space feel warm and cozy. That’s exactly why candles are so popular when it comes to Fall updates.  And it is also one of the ways you can adopt the Danish practice of Hygge.  There’s a lot of fun you can have here with different types and sizes of candle holders.

Choose a candle with a lovely smell that incorporates lavender or your favourite scent to make your home feel like it’s giving you a great big hug.

You can also use lanterns to dress up your candles. Place a couple of lanterns on top of a console table. Or try a few on the floor lighting your way into the living room from the entrance. They could be placed on either side of your fireplace too.

Got young kids or pets? That’s why we have flameless candles and they often come with a remote control.

If you’re not crazy about candles, try using fairy lights in lanterns or tall glass vases to create a similar ambiance in your home.

Bonus, everyone looks great in candle light!

Choose Chunky Knits for Throw Pillows and Blankets

Investing in a few throw pillows and a couple of blankets that are substantial, have a sense of weight and make you feel warm and cozy will definitely be worthwhile as the weather gets cold.

Throw pillow covers made of velvet or a woven fabric would work very nicely. Luxurious  faux fur and nubby bouclé are also perfect textures to add to this mix.

Earthy, nature inspired colours like terracotta, olive and raspberry will create that warmth in your space.  If you’re aiming for more calm than warm in your space, aim for deeper shades of blues and greys.

The key here is to stay away from the traditional fall colours of mustards, oranges and reds in favour of a more sophisticated colour palette.

A cable knit pouf or a floor pillow can be a great addition too, along with the throw pillows and blankets.

Brighten Up with Florals & Foliage

I love the idea of decorating with foliage like eucalyptus leaves, fall florals like chrysanthemums and pumpkins in various sizes, colours and textures.

You can use artificial versions of foliage and florals can be substituted, if the real deal is too expensive and too much of a hassle to deal with.
